Habeas corpus ad prosequendum, is a writ which issues for the purpose of removing a prisoner in order to prosecute. Asst. US Attorney Robert Coats issued this motion to have Lewis moved to Federal custody for trial
24-year-old Antun Lewis of Cleveland is being blamed for the deadliest house fire in the city's history. Lewis is accused breaking into a multifamily home on Cleveland East side and pouring gas on its floor and then torching it before 3 a.m. on May 21, 2005, during a sleepover.
Eight children and one adult, Medeia Carter, died from smoke inhalation. For three years we have been trying to get to the bottom of this tragedy and while we wish for "closure" for the families we are not sure if this prosecution is justice or a modern day lynching.
The Victims
Eight children -- Fakih Jones, 7; Shauntavia Mitchell, 12; Miles Golden Cockfield, 13; Earnest Tate Jr., 13; Antwon Jackson Jr., 14; Moses Williams Jr., 14; Devonte Carter, 15; Malee'ya Williams, 12 -- were found in a bedroom in the upstairs unit. Medeia Carter, 33, died in the master bedroom.
Two of Medeia Carter's friends escaped. Capritta Bell, who was in separate room, spent three weeks in a hospital burn unit. Teon Smith escaped unharmed from the basement.
